The Beacon Cafe

The Beacon Café is an ethical community Café in Hanham which operates on a “Pay-as-you-can” donation basis.  Our aim at We are BS15 is to reduce food inequality, food waste and social isolation. We don’t want cost to be a barrier to people accessing fresh, nutritious food or meeting people in their community. The idea is that those that can afford to pay will do so knowing they are contributing to something positive whilst those that aren’t able to pay full price will still be able to benefit.

Ensuring that we are using ethical produce is very important to us. Whilst we need to keep costs low due to the model we are using, we want to make sure that we are considering the social and environmental impact of the products that we use. We are therefore selecting local or ethical suppliers wherever possible.

We use Wogan Coffee which is roasted in Bristol and is Rainforest Alliance and Direct Trade certified. We use Clipper for our teas who are the UK’s number one Fairtrade Tea Company.  Our bread is supplied fresh every day by Warmley Bakehouse and our meat is supplied by Hanham Common Butchers. Our delicious milk comes from Chew Valley Dairy, which has been organically farming in the Mendip Hills for over 30 years. We have vegan cheese and spreads available as well as a selection of tasty vegan dishes. Plus, all our yummy cakes are made in-house using carefully considered ingredients.

We are also developing both our volunteer and community groups programmes as we want the Cafe to be a place where people can connect with their local community, learn new skills and be part of something meaningful. We’d love to hear from people who would be interested in getting involved. If you have ideas or suggestions or would like to volunteer, then please do drop us an email at thebeacon@wearebs15.co.uk
